ICC arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova .

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the Russian Commissioner for Children's Rights, were issued arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on March 17, 2023, alleging that they were responsible for the wrongful deportation and transfer of children during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The arrest warrant for Putin is the first ever issued against the president of a country that holds a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. An international court with its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, is the International Criminal Court (ICC). Both Ukraine and Russia are not members of the court; after a study labeled Russia's invasion of Crimea as an occupation, Moscow withdrew its signature in 2016. The arrest warrant was described as "outrageous and intolerable" by the spokesman for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, who also asserted that Russia does not recognize the ICC's authority. "It's amazing that the international community has acknowledged the work to aid the children of our country, that we take them out, that we provide decent settings for them, that we surround them with kind, caring people," Lvova-Belova told Russian official broadcaster RIA Novosti.
